Crabs in a Bucket
November 8, 2023My mom subsidizes our rental place in the Inland Empire with roommates. I would rather not share our house, but I enjoy living with roommates, especially the respectable, quiet, and professional-working ones. My mom had two spare rooms, which she rented out. They were both great roommates, and she has one in particular who worked the late shift. He hardly cooked or cleaned, and I hardly see him around the house. He uses our house like an affordable hotel room. He’s a great roommate in that he pays rent on time.
Basically, he simply works a lot, and he just sleeps here. On most occasions, when he goes to sleep, he turns on his fan. This fan is usually placed on top of a chair to prevent it from being on the floor. But on this occasion, it was so loud that the oscillations vibrated my room. His room is above mine on the second floor. Maybe he was tired and forgot it was on the floor, but at night, this makes it unbearable for me to sleep. Usually, all of my past roommates give me their contact numbers so I can reach them. He never gave me his, so I called my mom in panic because the vibrations make it hard for me to breathe or sleep at night. I hear her knocking on his door to tell him to place the fan on top of the chair because her son can’t sleep. He assured her that he was going to do it.
She then made steps to proceed to my bedroom on the first floor. When she cracked open my door, she would ask me, “Is it better now?” With a look of frustration, I said, “No!” My mom told me to just bear with it, as if she didn’t know what else to do. I tried not to blame her, as it wasn’t her fault. Since it was late at night, I tried to catch some shows on Netflix while affirming, “Isn’t it wonderful that there’s some peace and quiet in the house? Why is it so calm?”
I kept on repeating these affirmations throughout the night and until the early morning. I meditated with this mantra in mind, and I script these affirmations in my Journey app when I wake up. I would do this for 2-3 nights consecutively. I saw no way of removing the noise from this long-time roommate. But just this past week, he surprised my mom saying he’s getting back surgery and he can’t stay any longer.
It’ crazy how affirmations work when you believe in them.
